Renovating Gable Cottage; a tale of two cottages

Dating from 1860, we purchased Gable Cottage in October 2016. It was in a very poor state of repair and in much need of renovation. However, we had already fallen in love with the cottage by the time we’d received the surveyor’s report so, despite the wet and dry rot, the woodworm, the crumbling foundations and not to mention the lack of central heating or any connection to the main sewer we still felt it had real potential as a holiday home. Determined to bring new life to our cottage, we rolled our sleeves up and got stuck in (well, the builders did!).  We relocated the bathroom to create a third bedroom and extended the ground floor to allow for a much larger and modern kitchen which we felt our guests would appreciate. We installed under-floor heating and increased the capacity of the driveway to allow for off-road parking for up to two cars.  While the project demanded patience and resilience in bucket loads, seeing our lovely cottage take on its new identity was very rewarding and we look forward to welcoming you to your new ‘home from home’. Here are some photos of the cottage before and during the renovation work.
