A dog friendly Cotswold holiday cottage

Gable Cottage is one of the holiday cottages in the Cotswolds that is truly dog friendly.

We understand that your dog is not just a furry friend but part of your family. Planning a family holiday would simply not be the same if you left one of the gang at home.

This is why we open our doors to dogs as well as their humans.

Everyone can enjoy the fabulous Cotswold countryside together – just as it should be!

A dog friendly welcome at our holiday cottage

Our doggy welcome starts on arrival with a special Welcome Pack which includes a ball, a couple of chew sticks and some homemade dog biscuits.

We had to road test the biscuits before we offered them to our guests – our own two dachshunds, Molly and Tara, tell us they are yummy!

A refreshing drink will be much needed after a log journey. We always set out a dog bowl in advance.

If you’ve broken your journey with a little walk there is a handy outside tap for washing muddy paws (and walking boots), as well as a special dog towel for a nice post-walk rub down.

A cosy holiday cottage perfect for family dogs

We ask our four-legged guests to make themselves at home on the floor rather than the sofa, so we have made sure it is as comfortable as possible.

There is under-floor heating in both the kitchen and dining room and throughout the downstairs there are plenty of homely spaces for dog beds and crates.

You may not want to take your dog on every Cotswold adventure, so we are happy for them to chill out at the cottage on their own for short periods of time.

We’d prefer them to stay in the cosy kitchen where they can have some doggy downtime, safely secured from the rest of the property.

Dog friendly garden at our Cotswold cottage

We have done our best to make our lovely Cotswold courtyard garden as enclosed as possible.

There is both hedging and fencing to make it safe for dogs and children.

Although the Houdinis among us may be able to escape – in pursuit of their own adventure, so we always ask guests to be attentive. We know you will be.

The village road is very quiet and cars usually drive slowly past the cottage but we can’t guarantee that.

The safety of your dog is our concern.

Dog friendly walks in the Cotswolds

Being in an Area of Outstanding Beauty, our dog friendly holiday cottage is ideally situated for lovely long walks in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds.

There are plenty of walking routes that are favourable for dogs with plenty of opportunity for off-lead walks through open fields and peaceful woodland.

Right on our doorstep we have six circular walks around Ramsden and its neighbouring villages, which form part of The Wychwood Way.

Our own girls, Molly and Tara, always enjoy these local walks with lots of new and interesting smells and sounds.

There’s no end to their excitement if they get a sniff of a rabbit or catch sight of a pheasant. They never catch either of course, both being far too clever and fast, but it’s fun to watch their excited wagging tails!

You can find out more about local Wychwood Way walks here.

And check out Dog Friendly Cotswolds which will give you a few more ideas of where to go with your furry friends in and around Oxfordshire.

Don’t forget to take a peak at The Good Dog Guide as well.

Please do remember that Gable Cottage is situated in a rural area so walking routes may include fields with livestock.

You can download The Ramblers’ Dog Walking Code here which gives some really helpful advice on how to enjoy safe and happy walks with your dog.

Dog friendly Cotswold pubs

Happily, many local pubs, restaurants and attractions are tuned in to welcoming four legged holidaymakers; making your Cotswold break even more convenient and relaxed.

Our village pub in Ramsden, The Royal Oak is a traditional Cotswolds coaching inn serving local Oxfordshire ales and delicious homemade meals.

It is very dog friendly and is just around the corner from our Cotswold cottage – a distance easily walk-able with dogs and children in tow.

The Plough Inn is situated in a neighbouring village called Finstock. It is a fabulous thatched Cotswold inn and also welcomes dogs.

As does The Lamb Inn in nearby Crawley, set in a beautiful 18th century building with interconnecting rooms, low ceilings and original beams.

Dog friendly days out in the Cotswolds

Cotswold Wildlife Park with dogs

For a fun filled, dog friendly, family day out in the Cotswolds, you can’t beat the Cotswold Wildlife Park which has one of the largest collections of zoological species.

The park is involved in worldwide breeding and conservation programmes.

Dogs on leads are very welcome and can also join in the fun of watching penguins being fed.

Even dog shows have been held here to raise money for charity.

We also love that the wildlife park won an award for the most dog friendly attraction in 2015.

Dogs are not allowed indoors, or in the Bat Belfry, Reptile House, Children’s Farmyard nor any areas with free ranging animals.

Cotswold Wildlife Park opening times:

  • April to October 10.00 – 18.00. Last admission 16.00.
  • November to March 10.00 – DUSK or 17.00. Last admission 15.00.

Batsford Arboretum – visiting with dogs

Batsford Arboretum is another enchanting Cotswold attraction to visit with your dog – a fabulous local attraction with 56 acres of breathtaking Cotswold garden.

Throughout the arboretum and inside the main building, including the café, dogs and their humans are welcome.

The rules for dogs at Batsford Arboretum are as follows:

  • Keep your dog on a short lead at all times.
  • Keep your dog under control and do not allow them to bark persistently within the main building or on the café terrace as this may cause disruption to other visitors.
  • Clean up after your dog.
  • Do not allow your dog to urinate in or around the main building or in the plant area.
  • Dog water is available at several points around the visitor building and cafe. The streams and ponds around the arboretum are fed by a natural spring.

Batsford Arboretum is open from 10.00 – 16.00 daily.

Please check opening times on the official website.

Blenheim Palace – dog friendly Cotswold attraction

Blenheim Palace is possibly our most impressive local Cotswold attraction being a World Heritage Site and the birthplace of Winston Churchill.

Explore the fabulous parklands with your dog and enjoy breath-taking views across the beautiful Oxfordshire landscape.

The dog friendly areas of Blenheim Palace are: the Parkland, the Pleasure Gardens, the East Courtyard and the café seats near to the Welcome Desk and colonnades.

Keep dogs on leads for the safety of wildlife and livestock.

With the exception of assistance dogs, dogs aren’t allowed in the Palace, the main Courtyards or the Formal Gardens.

If dogs look to be in distress in a car Blenheim reserves the right to call the RSPCA. Rightly so!

Blenheim palace park and gardens are open from 9.30 – 18.00. Last admission 16.45.

Please check opening times on the official website.
